Bananas is an important food crop in Tanzania especially in the
highlands where it is a staple contributing the biggest part of the
peoples’ carbohydrate intake. Furthermore, bananas are used to produce
local brews, thatch for houses, animal feed and for making various
ornamental objects. Bananas are also an important cash crop.
Inspite of bananas being the stuff of life to many people, for a long
time it has tested little or no attempt to improve or sustain its yields.
Consequently in early 1770’s bananas began to snap due to banana weevils,
topple because of nematodes, wither as a result of diseases attack
especially panama and produced unacceptable bunches owing to
dwindling soil fertility and poor management. This was a crucial
cross- road where the once believed, no-problem status of banana was
obtaining no more. Indeed something needed to be done to preserve that
state of affairs so that people can continue enjoying their favourite
banana dishes.
