Simplified Activity – Based Method of Cost Estimates for Simple Buildings

Sh 5,000,000.00

This book is about you and your needs. It will make you be your own building’s cost estimator. It will lead you to understand the logics and mathematics behind the building’s values. And above all these, it will make you be up to date and catch up with the world of costs.
This book is solely about the Simple Building Cost Model. It is an activity-based- costing model, whereby about nineteen (19) activities or elements of the building are quantitatively estimated and each eventually costed to give a total estimate of the whole building cost. This model has been established by me to be used as one of the tools in analyzing the adequacy of one of the commonly used building cost valuation method in Tanzania. I developed this method when doing research for the Master degree of Engineering Management at the University of Dar es Salaam in 2014.

The model has been found to be handy and efficient in the establishment of cost for medium cost buildings.
The simplicity of its use is reflected through the use of a computer program in C++ language which is found in chapter 6, subsection 6.4. But for those who are not conversant with programming, the CD for calculation, using Microsoft Office Access application is given which is self-directing.
It is anticipated that as many people are quite good in computer applications, including Microsoft office Access, this model will have a wide application by many people, irrespective of their background training, as long as their sole purpose will be to determine the cost of their buildings that they have already built, or are planning to build or are planning to solicit bank loans based on the value of their buildings.
However, wide application will benefit Valuers, Turnkey Building Contractors, Quantity Surveyors and Engineers.

This is the prerequisite endeavor to a more detailed resource-based-model that will be my second book.
This activity-based-model entails collection and annually updating of activities’ unit costs from the local Quantity Surveyor, the experienced Contractors and Engineers, the relevant Institutions or development of the unit costs by oneself. The activities’ quantities are calculated by use of the model’s formulae or computer C++ programme or Microsoft Office Access application.
It is our hope that as the reader goes through the given chapters of this book, he/she will understand and enjoy more of its usefulness and applicability and make good of it.
